Best rock album of the past 25 years

In my opinion.. nothing comes close to comparing Nirvana at their best on this album. RIP

Yes I do really like this album BUT... too slick and mainstream, not definitively grunge and not quintessentially Nirvana... In Utero takes the cake in my opinion. Apparently In Utero was "slicked down" for mainstream release much to the dismay of band members. Would have loved to hear it in it's original form.

Maybe not the best album of the past 25 years, but almost certainly the most important and influential.

In what way was In Utero "slicked down"? Steve Albini's normal production technique is to just put a couple of really good microphones in the room and record the sound as it is.

When I said "slicked down", I'm really talking about the preproduction process. What I have heard is that the original tracks were presented to the record company in their demo form, to which the band was told "this needs to be changed so the finished product can be sold". I'm guessing there was stuff on the demo tracks that would not palatable to a mainstream audience (more crazy guitar sounds, more censorship on lyrics perhaps?) I agree the finished album is still pretty raw, but I would be interested to hear the original tracks as they appeared in preproduction. My knowledge of Steve Albini as producer of "In Utero" was that the band wasn't all too happy with him when the record company employed him to produce that album and actually fought to have a different producer? Would love to hear others thoughts.

It is a great album but i prefer the sludge of In utero. Can understand why it's always so high on people's lists but there's better bands and albums out there.

... maybe Pixies "Surfer Rosa" have the same kind of freshness

Eh... no way... Listen to more music.

OK Computer.

Nuff said.

Not to ruin your parade, but OK Computer hardly qualifies as "rock."

Anyway, the answer is Let It Be by the Replacements. Nevermind might crack the top 100.
