This eponymous debut album of The Coral is a real good surprise. They go hurtling off from the first song, “We’ve set sail again / We’re heading for the Spanish Main”. Full steam ahead! Off to the Caribbean’s, sailing on a powerful riff, brimming with energy…! Pirates ready to pillage the music of their predecessors, but sure, they make a good deal out of it then!
An excellent debut album, incredibly eclectic, totally crazy (changing directions when you expect it the least: “I Remember When” or “Skeleton Key”), the most diverse influences (from the Beatles to the La’s, through Ennio Morricone, The Byrds or Bob Marley), but we’ve been warned from the first title, “Spanish Main”: yes, we’re dealing with pirates, very weird and strange, creators of a new musical maelstrom; this Liverpool band are the new pop princes, and it’s not as hostages that we’ll join their madness!
I love the Coral. They have a whole retro appeal thing going for them, and their songs are pretty damn catchy.
The Coral's debut album has some great tracks on it, including the addictively catchy single "Dreaming Of You" and the depressing reggae "Shadows Fall"
